Ionah ("Klop") Platonovich Baron von Ustinov

Jona von Ustinow wurde am 2. Dezember 1892 in Jaffa, damals Osmanisches Reich, geboren. Seine Eltern waren der russische Offizier und Gutsbesitzer Plato von Ustinow und Magdalene von Ustinow, geb. Hall. Seine Schulbildung genoss er an der Deutschen Evangelischen Schule in Jerusalem und am Kloster-Realgymnasium in Düsseldorf, wo er 1911 das Abitur ablegte. Anschließend studierte er bis 1914 Jura. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs leistete er Militärdienst als Jagdpilot. Nach Ende des Krieges arbeitete er zunächst zwei Jahre als Korrespondent für „Wolffs Telegraphisches Bureau“, die erste deutsche Nachrichtenagentur, in Amsterdam.

Im Juli 1920 heiratete er, wenige Monate vor seiner Versetzung nach London, die gebürtige Russin Nadja Benois, die er in der Sowjetunion bei Erkundigungen nach dem Verbleib seines Vaters kennengelernt hatte. Ihr gemeinsamer Sohn, geboren am 16. April 1921 in London, ist der berühmte Schauspieler Sir Peter Ustinov.

Von Ustinow war parallel zu seiner Tätigkeit als Auslandskorrespondent an der Botschaft in London als Pressebeirat tätig. Im Mai 1935 wurde das Dienstverhältnis von den Nationalsozialisten beendet, da von Ustinow jüdische Vorfahren hatte. Die Familie blieb in London und nahm die britische Staatsangehörigkeit an. Von Ustinow wurde vom britischen Inlandsgeheimdienst MI5 angeworben. Jona von Ustinow starb am 1. Dezember 1962 in Eastleach/Gloucestershire.

Ustinov was born Jonah Freiherr von Ustinow in Jaffa, Palestine, then part of the Ottoman Empire, the son of Plato von Ustinov, a former Russian officer and naturalised citizen of the Kingdom of Württembergl who had married Magdalena Hall, then living in Jaffa, the daughter of the Ethiopian court-lady Katharina Hall, also known as Welette-Iyesus and her husband, Moritz Hall, a Jewish-born convert to Protestantism, cannon-caster of Tewodros II of Ethiopia and missionary of St. Chrischona Pilgrim Mission [de] in Ethiopia, and later in Jaffa.[1][2][3][4][5][6] Magdalena and Plato von Ustinov (sometimes transcribed as "Ustinow") had five children, of whom Jona/Jonah was the eldest.[7]

There is a family photograph that shows Magdalena von Ustinov (née Hall) with her husband and their children, including Jona/Jonah, who disliked his forename so much that he chose the nickname "Klop" ("Bedbug" in Russian) by which he was known to his friends and relatives for the rest of his life.[citation needed]

Ustinov went to school in Jaffa, where until 1900 his father hosted the school of the Protestant Immanuel congregation in his Hôtel du Parc, later in Düsseldorf, and Yverdon. He studied at Grenoble University, in France, and worked at the University of Berlin before he moved to London. That peripatetic life engendered in Ustinov a cosmopolitan attitude, which made him averse to any kind of nationalism
