Ira served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private. initially in Co. K, 12th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry, on 12 December 1863, making him 44 years old when he enlisted. At some point he joined or was transferred to Co. C, 22nd Veteran Reserve Corps undoubtedly because he had what was thought to be chronic bronchitis but was actually consumption or tuberculosis, the eventual cause of his death. He received a disability discharge from the the 22nd Veteran Reserve Corps on 29 May 1865.
Upon his death, his widow applied for and received a widow's pension based on his service, Widow's Application #202606 and Widow's Certificate #171260. The pension file names all of the children listed below.
Ira Way and Mary A. Sutton were his parents. He married Mary Jane Hawkins and resided in Putnam Co.,IL.They were the parents of thirteen children:
