Upon his death of her first husband, Ira D. Way, Mary Jane applied for and received a widow's pension based on his service, Widow's Application #202606 and Widow's Certificate #171260. She undoubtedly was granted the pension because she had minor children at the time of the application. The pension file names all of the children listed below.

On 17 March 1881 she married Thomas Lowe, Sr., in Magnolia Twp., Putnam Co., Illinois. When Thomas Lowe died on 19 March 1886, Mary Jane applied for a pension based on his service in the Civil War in Co. E, 140th Illinois Infantry, Widow's Application #464004. Her daughter Sophrona Francis (Way) Gore submitted an affidavit as Fanny Gore in support of her application. Affidavits were also submitted by Mary Jane's son-in-law Willilam Lock and granddaughter Mary A. Iliff in support of her application. The application was still being processed or was still under consideration at the time of her death.

Mary Jane was undoubtedly buried beside Ira D. Way in the plot beside his grave that does not have a marker.
