About Ireen Wüst

Ireen Wüst is een Nederlandse schaatsster. Tijdens de Olympische Winterspelen 2006 in Turijn won ze op negentienjarige leeftijd goud op de 3000 meter en brons op de 1500 meter. Wüst werd daarmee de jongste Nederlandse olympisch kampioene op de Winterspelen ooit. Tijdens de Olympische Winterspelen 2010 in Vancouver behaalde ze goud op de 1500 meter; bij de Olympische Winterspelen 2014 in Sotsji behaalde ze goud op de 3000 meter en de ploegenachtervolging, en zilver op de 1000, 1500 en 5000 meter. Tijdens de Olympische Winterspelen 2018 behaalde ze goud op de 1500 meter en zilver op de 3000 meter en de ploegenachtervolging. Ze is met vijf gouden, vijf zilveren en één bronzen olympische medaille de succesvolste Nederlandse deelnemer aan Olympische Spelen in de geschiedenis, en is de eerste schaatser die elf olympische medailles heeft gewonnen. Ireen Wüst is a Dutch long track allround speed skater. Wüst is the youngest Dutch Olympic gold medalist in the history of the Winter Games. At the age of nineteen, on 12 February 2006, she won the gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games 3000 metre event; four years later at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games she won the 1500 metre event; at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games she won two gold and three silver medals, making her the most decorated athlete at the Sochi Games. Following her most recent victory in the 1500 metres at the 2018 Winter Olympics she has won a record eleven Olympic medals, more than any other speed skater, making her the most successful athlete of the Netherlands at the Olympics. She is also a seven-time world allround champion, a fourteen-time world single distance champion, and a five-time European allround champion.
