Isaac Debnam was a boy of 11 when he, with his parents and three siblings, was in Hyman's Party of 1820 Settlers on the 'Weymouth', which sailed from Portsmouth early in 1820. His father was listed as Isaac DEBNOM, Weaver, 38; his mother Mary George 39; his sister Eliza 17, his sister Ann 13. There is some doubt about his brother John, who would have been 16 at the time. The Captain's Log of the 'Weymouth', as transcribed, does not show John, but other listings do. http://www.albany1820.com/menu/1820%20Settlers%20-%20Full%20List.htm shows John Debnam (16) as having been on the 'Weymouth'. The spelling of the family name is there given as DEBNAM.

At some stage the family name seems to have been changed to DEDNAM. There has been a suggestion that the name originally was DEBENHAM. In some of the Baptism registers in South Africa the name has been spelled DEDNAM, DEDMAN, DEDNUM and DEADMAN. In one case it might even have been transcribed as DEELMAN, as the clerk's handwriting is difficult to read. The author of an article entitled 'The Dednams of South Africa' has the spelling DEDNAM. A member of the family, John Henry Dednam, who is listed in www.1820settlers.org married Anne Margaret Cockcroft and had twelve children with her.

Later Isaac Debnam married Elizabeth Jane Flinn (not O'Flinn), who, with her parents, had been in George Smith's party of 1820 Settlers on the 'Stentor'. A party of 71 from Lancashire led by Lieutenant George SMITH sailed in the 'Stentor'. In Simon's Bay they were transferred to the 'Weymouth'. Elizabeth's family consisted of: FLINN, Daniel 42, Farmer and Army pensioner; w Catherine 42; c Ann 13; John 9. Catherine's maiden name was Bullock.
