Isaac Roberts, Jr (b. October 03, 1776, d. March 1839)

Isaac Roberts, Jr [278]

  • was born October 03, 1776 in Moreland Twp, Philadelphia, PA [279], and
  • died March 1839 in Preble Co., Ohio [279].
  • He married Christiana "Tiney" Banta on December 07, 1820 in Preble Co., Ohio, daughter of Peter S. Banta, Sr and Effie "Effa" Hole.

Notes for Isaac Roberts, Jr:

Per Dan Roberts information dated 1995: Chronology of Events Extracted From: History of Green Co., Wisconsin published in 1884, from information received from Susan Kendall, Librarian at Eaton, Ohio, and from information received from Mrs. John Irvin of Monroe, Wisconsin. 1790-1800 Isaac Roberts was born in Pennsylvania, and came to Ohio with his parents when a young boy.

  • 1819 Moved from Warren County, Ohio to Preble County, Ohio
  • 1820 Married Christina Banta in Preble Co., Ohio
  • 1817-1821 First child born. Marriage date indicates this should be 1821, however the article in the above book states that Christina moved to Clarno from Ohio in Sept 1842 with twelve children, the oldest about 25 years of age, which would put the birth date back to 1817.
  • 1823 Isaac is listed as witness to a Deed in Preble Co., Ohio
  • 1825 John V Roberts born.
  • 1827 By this time, 4 other children born. At this point, there were four boys and two girls.
  • 1828 to 1834 Four more children born; Daniel about 1828; William about 1831; Effie about 1833; Anna about 1834
  • 1830 The family is listed in 1830 census of Lanier Township, Preble Co., Ohio. Isaac is shown at age between 30 and 40, so would have been born between 1790 and 1800, approximately. Note that the Census also lists a male in the household age between 15 and 20. Must have been someone other that a son, because Christina was only about 26 at that time.
  • 1835 Isaac is listed in Personal Property tax rolls in Lanier Township, Preble Co., Ohio. That fall he "entered land" in town of Clarno, Green Co., Wisconsin then went back to Ohio.
  • 1836 Albert was born on May 21, 1836. In this year, Issac is not listed in the tax rolls in Preble Co. Note that Glen Carter told someone that his grandfather "Albert Guy Roberts" was born in Ashtabula, Ohio. Possibly the family, or at least the mother was back there that year?
  • 1837 Isaac is listed as a mail recipient at the Post office in Eaton, Preble Co., Ohio.
  • 1840 Isaac died in Ohio. Albert would have been 4 years old then.
  • 1842 In September, Christina and the twelve children moved to the land in Clarno, Green Co., Wisconsin, which Isaac had "entered" earlier. The article in the History of Green Co relates that when they arrived in Clarno they had a team, three cows, and $2.00. That first fall, they put up a log house, and managed to pass the winter with but little suffering. The article goes on to say that the family continued together for a number of years, working by the month during the summer season, until most of the children reached maturity. So, here was a woman who had been married when she was about 16, and by the time she was 35 or so was a widow with 12 children, the youngest about 1 year old, who moved her family from Ohio to Wisconsin to a bare piece of land.
  • 1849 John V Roberts, who was still on the homestead at Clarno, returned to Ohio, married in 1850, and returned to Clarno.
  • 1854 John V moved to Monroe, Green Co., Wisconsin and operated a sawmill for 8 years, which would have been until 1862. Another account in the Green Co. History talks about a Shattuck sawmill at Monroe which was originally built by Barber and Chenoweth in 1855, and was operated by Henry Barber for a number of years, then was owned by Roberts & Land until 1866, when it was purchased by J. E. Shattuck. If that was this John V Roberts, the two sets of dates don't match.
  • 1862 John V then moved to Cadiz, Green Co., Wisconsin. At the time the History was written in 1884, his farm at Cadiz consisted of 400 acres. Note: the current map at hand shows Clarno located south of Monroe, Wisconsin near the Illinois border, but it does not show Cadiz. However, there is a Cadiz Springs Recreational Area shown near Browntown, west of Clarno.
  • 1862 Christina moved to Monroe, Green Co., Wisconsin (from the homestead in Clarno??)
  • 1865 Christina died in Monroe on Nov. 19, 1865, at about 61 years of age. John V Roberts filed a petition with the Court asking for letters of administration, as follows: To the Judge of the Co. Court Green Co. - Wisconsin - Your petitioner John Roberts would Respectfully show unto this court that Christina Roberts departed this life at her Residence at Monroe in said Co. on the 19th day of November AD 1865 - intestate - leaving assets both personal and real in said Co. -- She left the following named heirs to wit: Peter Roberts, Residence Green Co.; James Roberts, Residence Green Co.; Magdalene Wilson, Residence Green Co.; J. V. Roberts, Residence Green Co.; Hannah Smith, deceased, children residence unknown; Daniel Roberts, Residence Nebraska; Wm. Roberts, Residence Oregon; Effa Jones, Residence Green Co.; Anna McDuff, Residence Green Co.; Albert Roberts, Residence Minnesota; Henry Roberts, Residence Minnesota. Your partitioner is one of the above heirs and has been requested by all said heirs residing in this Co. to make this application. Your petitioner prays for Letters of Administration in said Estate. Signed: J. V. Roberts, Subscribed and sworn before me this 14th day of March AD 186_? (Can't read signature of witness)
  • 1878 Thomas Roberts, son of James Roberts and Mary Ann McGriff Roberts, died at the home of John V Roberts near Monroe, Green Co., Wisconsin.
  • 1884 At the date of the historical article, 1884, eight of the twelve children were still living. John V was still in Green Co. One son of Isacc and Christina had served in the 21st Wisconsin Regiment, Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, and was living in Texas.
