About Isabel de Dunbar

Disputed Origins

Isabel is seen as daughter of Roger de Merlay and Margery de Umfreville.

However, MacEwen, Andrew. A Clarification of the Dunbar Pedigree. The Genealogist, 9(2) 1988: PDF shows that the sister of Patrick lll de Dunbar, 6th/7th Earl of Dunbar was Isabella, wife of Roger FitzJohn of Warkworth, and therefore double sister in law of Cecilia, who married the 3rd Earl. Euphemia de Brus, countess of Dunbar was her mother.

Isabel

Isabella was living in 1269. She married Roger fitz John, 4th Lord Warkworth, son of John fitz Robert the Surety, 3rd Lord of Warkworth Castle and Ada de Baliol, circa 1220. He died 1249, and she married Sir Simon Bayard secondly.

Notes

ROGER FitzJohn of Warkworth, Northumberland, Horsford, Norfolk, and Clavering, Essex (-[May] 1249). A manuscript genealogy of the founders of Horsham priory, Norfolk names “Rogerum” as the son of “Johannem filium Roberti”, son of “Roberto filio Rogeri”[147]. Matthew Paris records the death in a 1249 tournament of "quidam de nobilioribus baronibus Borealibus Rogerus filius Johannis" and names his mother "Ada de Bailliol"[148]. [m firstly ---. As noted below, the 9 Aug 1249 documents relating to land granted to Roger’s wife Isabella/Sibylla and the appointment of a custodian of the lands of his son Robert do not specify that Isabella/Sibylla was Robert’s mother. It is possible therefore that he was born from an earlier otherwise unrecorded marriage of his father.] m [secondly] ISABELLA [Sibylla], daughter of --- (-after 9 Aug 1249). A document dated 9 Aug 1249 grants “manerium de Eynho...manerium de Acclinton...tercia pars foreste de Robur” to “Isabelle [...predicte Sibille] que fuit uxor Rogeri filii Johannis in partem dotis sue de terris que fuerunt predicti Rogeri”[149]. No document has been found which confirms Isabella/Sibylla’s family origin. She is not named as mother of Roger’s son Robert in the document of the same date which appoints a custodian of Robert’s lands until he reached the age of majority. Roger & his [first/second] wife had one child:

Not seen at http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/SCOTLAND.htm#Euphemiadied1267 as a daughter of Euphemia de Brus, countess of Dunbar

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_II%2C_Earl_of_Dunbar

Before 1213, he married Euphemia (d. 1267 at Whittingehame),[2][3] whom historians had previously believed to be daughter of Walter FitzAlan, 3rd High Steward of Scotland and lord of Kyle (i.e. Kyle Stewart), Strathgryfe and Bute.[1]

Euphemia's father was, however, certainly not Walter FitzAlan.[4]

Issue by Euphemia:

  • Patrick, 7th Earl of Dunbar.[1]
  • Isabel de Dunbar, who married Roger FitzJohn, of Warkworth, Northumberland son of John FitzRobert (died before 22 June 1249 in Normandy).[5][6]

In spite of MichaelAnne's firm statement that Euphemia was not the dau. of Roger and Isabella, John Ravilous is saying that she was (s.g.m. 4 Nov 2004, "Magna Carta line of Euphemia wife of William Comyn..."):

"Two items that support the present placement of the latter Euphemia (__) (Comyn) Murray as daughter of Isabel de Dunbar and
Roger fitz John:

" 1. Isabel's brother Earl Patrick was alive at the time of the dispute between Euphemia and William Comyn on one part, and Isabel de Dunbar and her 2nd husband Simon Baard of the 2nd part. It seems illogical for Isabel to have been placed as guardian for the minor Euphemia as to the castle given her by the elder Euphemia de Brus, Countess of Dunbar, UNLESS Isabel was in fact Euphemia's mother, and not her aunt.

" 2. In discussing these finds with Andrew MacEwen last week, he stated that Euphemia was the daughter of Isabel de Dunbar and Roger fitz John."
