About József Kuli
Jozseph Kuli (1940 - 2009)
Brief overview:
Jozseph Kuli (69), a Hungarian-born retired industrial chemist, who became a landscaping contractor, was murdered on March 24th 2009 at his agricultural smallholding in Johannesburg just before his 70th birthday. He was born in the ancient* bronze-age village of Tápiószecső, Hungary.
Jozseph's ex-pat daughter, Marie Atkins, was deeply traumatised, and also very angered by the unnecessarily cruel way her father, a refugee from the Hungarian, was murdered right in front of her eyes. “It was a totally senseless killing as he was unarmed and dressed only in his underpants. There were four attackers in the house, and one outside. All they took were mobile phones, a hard drive, a laptop, keys and wallets which didn't have much in them.“ Atkins was visiting her father at the time with her husband from Australia to celebrate his 70th birthday. Atkins said her father was a keen conservationist of South Africa’s lavish variety of ferns and after retiring from his mining job, turned his hand to landscape contracting.
Kuli met his first wife Dorothy McIntosh, Maria Atkins’s mother, in Scotland, and had two children, Maria and Jozseph, and decided to emigrate to South Africa, where the skilled industrial chemist was offered a job at General Mining. The family eventually ended up in Nelspruit near the Zimbabwean border in 1980, where he was employed at Delta Manganese.
