Biography

John Darling was born in about 1658 in Lynn or Salem, MA. The connection of this John Darling to these parents of George Darling and Katherine is made clear by a 1734 Essex County, MA deed, involving John's father and children - see discussion below.

He first married Elizabeth Muzzy, at Marblehead, MA, in 1680.[1] She was the daughter of Benjamin Muzzy and Alice Dexter, and granddaughter of Robert Mussey.

It is said that John and Elizabeth had a daughter Elizabeth, born in 1681. John lost his wife when she died 2 May 1681, perhaps at childbirth.

The circumstances of John's move to Fairfield, CT are not known, but what is know is that he married there in about 1688 with Elizabeth Beers. Elizabeth was born in Fairfield, CT in about 1662, the daughter of James Beers and Martha Barlow. John and Elizabeth raised at least seven children in Fairfield, CT:

Hannah, b. abt. 1689; m. Richard Whitney, 7 Apr. 1709; d. 20 Oct. 1774
Martha, b. 1692; m. John Bradley
John, b. 24 Mar. 1695; m. Abilena Jessup
James, b. 17 Apr. 1698
Samuel, b. 17 Apr. 1698
Joseph, b. June 1701; m. Rachel Bulkley, and
Benjamin, b. 28 Feb. 1703; m. Mary Hyde, 6 Jan. 1725; d. 1788.
A 1734 Deed in Essex County, MA, identifies "Joseph, John, Benjamin, Hannah, and Martha" as "children of John Darling late of Fairfield" and "grandchildren of George Darling, late of Salem" of Essex County, MA.[2] The purpose of this Deed was to transfer the house and 40 acres of land in Salem, MA, part of George Darling's Estate, to Benjamin Darling "of Boston" for a sum of 22 pounds and 10 shillings.

Probate

He died intestate. His inventory was taken on 16 February 1718/19. His son John was the administrator of the estate. The court laid out the distribution for four sons, John, James, Joseph, and Benjamin; and two daughters, Hannah and Martha. The eldest son was to get a double portion and the others a single. Sons Joseph and Benjamin made the choice of their brother in law John Bradley to be their guardian.[3]

Research Notes (to be revised)

The ancestry of John Darling III seems accurate back to his grandfather, John II (1683-1753) who married Mary Page in 1708. He was the son of Naomi Flanders (daughter of Stephen Flanders and Jane, a Sandusky Indian Princess) but the identity of his father is a mystery. Waldo Glover lists his father as Samuel; George Scott Darling lists him as George, a sea captain out of Salem, MA; Lawrence Heath lists him as Jonathan, son of George and Katherine (Gridley) Darling, in his book Our Family Legacy; other sources list him as John, son of Samuel; John, son of George and Katherine (Gridley); and the book Darlings of New England and Beyond compiled by Virginia Darling Otto and R. Evelyn Darling Olson from the works of Carlos Darling, Delia Darling Honey, and Henry Darling list him as unknown.

Naomi acknowledged that her child was illegitimate when summoned to court at Ipswich, MA in 1682, but she didn’t reveal the name of his father. When he was born, Naomi named him John Darling, so perhaps John, son of George and Katherine Darling is the best guess, and he is the one used in these Darling family records. Naomi Flanders was summoned to court to acknowledge that her child was illegitimate on 29 April 1684. Father was John Darling.

John may have had two illegitimate children with Naomi Flanders, but the father of Naomi's sons John or Daniel may have also been John's father Georg
