About Jack Whelbourne
http://www.teamgb.com/athletes/jack-whelbourne
Jack Whelbourne represented Team GB in short track speed skating at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. They were his debut Games and he placed 16th in the 1500m, as well as being a member of the 5000m relay team which placed sixth.
He began skating at the age of six and first represented Great Britain as a junior eight years later. After an impressive junior career, which included becoming Junior World Champion in 2011, Jack has become a successful senior that has already won a number individual medals at the European Championships, including gold in 2011 and silver in 2012 both in the 500-metres.
Jack has achieved several top eight finishes at the ISU World Cup series over the past two seasons in a range of distances. He will be competing in all the distances at Sochi, and despite favouring the 500-metres, Jack feels he is stronger over the 1000 and 1500-metres.
Jack, who has lived in Nottingham all his life, trains and competes alongside his sister Alex Stanley and brother-in-law Paul Stanley, who are also long standing members of the national squad and both accomplished skaters.
Jack’s girlfriend is Elise Christie and they have recently moved in together. He has a Chihuahua called JJ (Jack Junior), who is kept company by Elise’s dog Benji and her two cats. He is a big fan of cars, motorbikes and mechanics, and his latest project is restoring a bright yellow1972 VW Beetle.
