Brief overview:

Jackie (68) and her husband Don (72) were dedicated breeders of valuable parrots. On November 2nd 2011, Jackie and Don were attacked early in the morning while feeding their bird-collection. They were tied up, and Jackie was shot in the head, and Don was bludgeoned to death. A friend, Mrs Brenda Clement, and her husband had gone to the smallholding when Mrs du Plessis failed to show up for her Bible-study, and found the murdered couple.

The couple's daughter, Vanessa Evans, said that she was convinced that the Zimbabwean couple who worked for her mother, could be involved: 'they threatened to kill my parents. Something ominous also happened to her parents just a day before the murder: en-route to the Johannesburg Airport, one of their vehicle's wheels dropped off. It was found that three of the four bolts attaching the wheel to the vehicle had been sawn through. She said her stepfather was ‘not healthy’ and relied on the work from helpers. "He often hired Zimbabweans to work for him,' she said. Mrs Du Plessis herself also was involved in work-creation projects in the local black community. Her other two daughters Mrs Lindy Tennant en Anne Lloyd were en-route from the West Cape and Switzerland.

Investigative Officer, Captain Elsabe Augustides said an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from the safe as well as a camera and a laptop. Police were looking to question the Zimbabwean couple, the woman was a domestic worker, while her boyfriend did general work on a bird farm. “Police have linked the two to the crime because they disappeared a day before the bodies were found,” Augustides said. A house robbery and two murder dockets have been opened.
