Death of Mr. Jacob Bowden.— Through the death of Mr. Jacob Bowden, which took place at his residence, Goodwood, on Thursday week, another old colonist has passed away. Mr. Bowden, who was born in Cornwall on April 1, 1809, arrived in the colony by the Royal Admiral in January, 1838. Soon after his arrival he started in business as a medical herbalist, and for many years enjoyed a very large practice, the scarcity of legally qualified medical men in the early days of the colony having brought his services into great request. He was credited with many cures, and did much good amongst the poorer classes of the community. As might be expected, he has seen many changes in the colony, but throughout them all he remained in business in Gilles-street untiln1882, when he retired in favour of his son. 'Dr.' Bowden, as he was usually called, was married twice, and his second wife survives him. He had several children by his first wife, some of whom are still living.
