Elmer Ellsworth, leader of the 44th New York Infantry was a well-known militia commander and a friend of Abraham Lincoln. Col. E. Elmer Ellsworth was killed in action on 24 MAY 1861 at the MARSHALL House Tavern in Alexandria, Virginia
