John Wheeler emigrated to this country before the Revolutionary War. Actually most declare he was born on the ship on the way to America and was 6 weeks of age upon arrival. Capt Wheeler served as a soldier under Washington, and was present at the surrender at Yorktown., VA on 19 October 1781.

The Diary of David Simon, 1826, states that "John Wheeler {husband of Catherine Gauer} lived at the mugh (mouth) of Buffalo Creek at the foot of Laurel Hill at that time." (In 1800 Buffalo Creek was part of Harrison Co VA/WV.)
