Jacob Gupton was the son of Stephen Gupton and Nancy Portis. he married Elizabeth Bass in 1805 in Franklin County, North Carolina. They moved to Wabash County about 1830. They were the parents of Nancy Ann Gupton Morgan, Ann Gupton, Malinda Gupton Rodgers, Rose Ann Gupton James, Elizabeth Gupton, Sarah Gupton McManaman, Mary Ann Gupton McKinney, Matilda Gupton, Jacob Gupton and Rina Gupton Armstrong. He was the brother of Jesse, Cooper, John, Stephen, William H. and Isaac Gupton. He also had several sisters.

From the Combined History of Edwards, Lawrence and Wabash County, Illinois

"Jacob Gupton with a family of 3 children came from North Carolina in 1825 and became a permanent resident of the precinct. With him came his son-in-law Calvin Morgan, whose possessions consisted of a little pony and fifty cents in money. By the diligent employment of his time in winter at shoe making and in summer at farming, he accumulated a good deal of property. Two sons survive him, George in Lancaster and Hiram in Lick Prairie."

NC Militia, War of 1812. Volunteered at Gates Court, NC Oct 2, 1814 for 6 months. served 1 month 16 dys. discharged Norolk. Has no certificate of marriage. Md. 1805 by Rev. Benj. Bamel, Baptist Minister of God. Maiden name Elizabeth Bass. Jacob died July 26, 1852 in Wabash County. Witnesses were Calvin Morgan and Jacob Gupton Jr.
