Unfortunately, when the Mennonites started to arrive they were disappointed with the available land in Chortitza. He was accused of embezzlement, withholding funds promised by the Russian government, and negotiating in bad faith. In 1781 he was living in Augustkamp, Prussia and he later ran an eating establishment and Hakenbude at Bohnsack in the Nehrung. In the 1795 Chortitza Colony Census he is listed at Insel Chortitza #4 (B. H. Unruh, p. 238). In the 1801 Census his family is listed at Insel Chortitza #4, but he himself was not listed in the census. The diary of Jacob Niebuhr (b. 4 May 1862) says he was born 22 Dec 1748, which was apparently his o. s. birth date. One record says he died 5 May 1826. His new style (and original) birthdate was 3 Jan, but he returned to the old style (Julian) calendar when he migrated to Russia. However, if his old style birthdate was 22 Dec 1748, then his new style birthdate would be 2 Jan 1749.
