~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hans Jacob Honegger (Honaker is the Americanized name) was a son, born to Hans Jacob Honegger and Elsbeth Basshart at Hinwil, a village outside of Zurich, Switzerland on July 24, 1718.
Hans Jacob became a carpenter and was having a hard time supporting himself in Switzerland. The reports coming in from America were sounding favorable for opportunities in the "New Land." Consequently, there was a rush of people heading for the New World & hopeful prosperity. Sometime before Hans Joseph was 30, he moved to Basel, Switzerland, which was the stop-off for people traveling from Zurich to America.
On June 20, 1747, Hans Joseph married Anna Bleyer in Pratteln, Switzerland, which was a suburb of Basel. Ten months later, they welcomed a baby and named him Hans Jacon Honegger. Hans Jacob, Sr. applied to emigrate; however the government process was slow. Finally on/about May 8, 1749, they left for America.
The voyages were rough & conditions deplorable. Food was scarce and the little they did receive was barely edible. No more that 3 warm meals were served each week. There was also a constant 'stench' that permeated the ship. Sadly, Anna & their one year old baby did not survive the crossing. They were buried, along with many others, at sea.
The cost of the voyage from Switzerland was about sixteen pounds per person. If a person did not have the money to pay for their passage; they would make deals to work this debt off once they arrived at their destination. It took about 4 years to work off this debt.
Hans Jacob Honegger arrived on the H.M.S. Crown in Philadelphia, PA on August 30, 1749, nearly 4 months after the voyage began. He arrived with no money & this is how he began his new life in America.
All immigrant males over the age of 16 were required to remain on board ship until they were either purchased as servants or signed "the Oath of Allegiance"; which Hans did upon arrival. Hans Jacob Honaker became an indentured servant in Philadelphia. His basic needs were provided by his master but he had few privileges. He could not buy or sell anything or marry without his master's consent.
When his indentured contract was over, he was given "Freedom Dues", which in 1750's Philadelphia was a horse & a suit of clothes. He married Maria Goetz (possibly with his master's permission) within 4 years of his arrival in Pennsylvania.
