About Jacob / Jakob Pick

GEDCOM Note

Jacob Pick was born in 1808 in Pacov the son of David Pick and Elizabeth geb. Kollman. We know nothing of his early life but he moved at some point to Strakonice where he worked for the felt maker Moyzes Weil who had married Jacob's elder sister Hellena Weil in 1815.

Moyzes was a dynamic man who, it was said, bathed every morning throughout his life in the stream that ran through his back garden in Strakonice. He also drove an ox-wagon from Strakonice carrying a large load of fezzes which he took the length of the Balkans annually, selling his produce in Constantinople. He acquired the contract to supply Napoleon with fezzes for his Zouaves, establishing the large company called "Fezko".

In due course Jacob Pick married Moyzes' aand Hellana's daughter Fani (Franziska Weil) thus marrying his neice. In the process Moyzes became both brother-in-law and father-in-law to Jacob! And at some point he also became business partner as well. Moyzes died in 1865 at the age of 86 and Jacob died in 1885 at the age of 76/7.
