https://loyolanotredamelib.org/php/report05/articles/pdfs/Report36S... lists a Major William Klein of the German Regiment in the Revolution while Mühlenberg's journal, on Oct 28, 1779 mention the widow Kleyn (sic) and her son Gottlieb of the Geman Regt. whom she want to have released form duty.

However: The following suggests no connection of WIlliam to Gottleib: Colonel William Klein
Lieutenant Colonel William Klein was born in Germany and, as a
young man, is said to have served in the Prussian army. He emigrated
to America and probably settled in Lancaster County. Upon the organization of the German Battalion he was one of the two majors appointed
from Pennsylvania, July 17, 1776. He served with the Battalion continuously in this capacity until September 3, 1778. He then became second
in command under Colonel Weltner, taking part in General Sullivan's
[33]
campaigns against the Indians. His health had suffered during the long
years of warfare and on June 21, 1779, there being no further fighting in
prospect, Colonel Klein resgined his commission and returned to Germany."

Roll of Capt. Henry Fister's Company. In the German Battalion.
Commd. by Col. Nicholas Hussecker. 1776. includes Gottlieb Klein (page 44)
