About Jacob Shoemaker

~• seen on an early land map of Germantown

Jacob Shoemaker was born about 1660 in Crailsheim, Schwäbisch-Hall, Baden-Württemberg, Germany;[1]or Crailsheim, Fürstentum Ansbach, Heiliges Römisches Reich.[2]

His parents were Jacob Rosen Schumacher and Margaret Gove.

He married Margaret Potts in 1682 in Philadelphia.

Jacob Shoemaker[1] also used the surname Schumacher[1]

He was an early migrant to Pennsylvania, living in Germantown in 1682. He left from Cresheim, Germany, on the ship "America." He was 17 years old, one of a party of emigrants under Francis Daniel Pastorious. Other members were Georg Wertmuller, Isaac Dilbeck, Tune Kunders, Arents Klincken, Denis Kundore also spelled Conrad. Pastorious took up land and laid out Germantown, Pennsylvania, 12 October 1682.[1]

The town formed by this company consisted of 13 families. In less than 5 years, 50 houses were erected. First religious meeting by The Friends (Quakers) in the town was 1683. Under Charter of 1690 these emigrants bought 25,000 acres from Wm. Penn. Pastorious was appointed Attorney for the Company.[1]

In 1690, Jacob was made sheriff of Germantown, Pennsylvania.[1]

He was married, probably in Pennsylvania, and had four children, one son was named Jacob.[1]

He died in 1722, probably in Philadelphia County, Province of Pennsylvania.[1] "The first to arrive in Pennsylvania, of those bearing the name of Schumacher, was Jacob. There is no way of knowing positively, but it is possible that he was a brother of George and Peter" (source: Shoemaker Genealogy, Philadelphia, Lippincott, 1903, pp. 5-9).
