He was born in Coventry township, Chester Co. PA. He was a German Baptist Brethren, also known as Dunkards because of their practice of baptism by immersion. In 1751, he married Magdalena "Lenah". She was born about 1732 in either Maryland or Pennsylvania. She died about 1773 in Spring Garden (the area now known as Johnsville). Their children were John, David, Marian Molly, Catharina, Rebecca, Sarah, Samuel, Isaac, and Abraham.
