Extract, p.2. (See Media document):
"Jacob Teschner had the Hebrew name of "Jechezkiel". He was a "kocsmaros" by occupation -- an innkeeper or a saloon keeper. In 1848, he is also listed as a "haszonbérlő", or a "Pächter". He resided in Vag Besztercze for all of his adult life and is seen there in Jewish censuses taken in 1809, 1818, 1821, 1828, and 1848. He was married twice and was the father of a total of 19 children - seven by his first wife and 12 more by his second wife. His eldest child was born when he was 21 and his youngest when he was 62...Of these children, five sons and two daughters came to New York City. Two sons remained in Europe....Jacob Teschner died in 1849 when a cholera epidemic swept through Vag Besztercze. One of his daughters, Rachel (Teschner) Bluh, also died in the same epidemic.

His great-granddaughter, Dr. Rosebud (Teschner) Solis-Cohen, wrote the following about him in her notes on the Teschner family: “Jacob Teschner lived and died in Hungary, probably in Hlinik or Bistritz. He was not a rich man, but had many children. He was married twice. His first wife’s name I don’t know. His second wife, Rachel, was born in Vienna and lived as a child in the Judengasse section of Vienna. She was there when Napoleon bombarded the city and her stories about that experience were passed down to my family. Her family fled Vienna around that same time.

4. Jacob (Jechezkiel) 4 TESCHNER (Leopold (Lobl) 3, Aron2 , Joseph1 ) was born 1774 in Podhradek,Trencin Co., Hungary, and died 1849 in Vag Besztercze, Trencin Co., Hungary. He married (1) Esther ("Netti") POPPER abt. 1796 in Hlinik, Trencin Co., Hungary, daughter of Samuel POPPER and Rachel. She was born abt. 1778 in Hlinik, Trencin Co., Hungary, and died bef. 1814 in Vag Besztercze, Trencin Co., Hungary. He married (2) Rachel ("Rosi") ("Regi") WILHELM abt. 1814 in Vag Besztercze, Trencin Co., Hungary, daughter of Wolfgang WILHELM and Catharina POPPER. She was born 1798 in Vienna, Austria, and died 16 Mar 1876 in Vag Besztercze, Trencin Co., Hungary.

Jacob Teschner died during an epidemic that also killed off several other family members. He had at least five children by his first wife, and then a very large family by his second wife Rachel. Of these children, five sons and two daughters came to New York City. Two sons remained in Europe.

Notes for Esther ("Netti") POPPER: Esther (Popper) Teschner died as a young woman, leaving several children. Her husband, Jacob Teschner, soon married, as his second wife, her niece, Rachel Wilhelm.

Notes for Rachel ("Rosi") ("Regi") WILHELM: Rachel Wilhelm was the daughter of Wolfgang Wilhelm von Bobot and his wife, Catharina (Popper). She was the niece of Esther (Popper) Teschner, Jacob Teschner’s first wife. Following her aunt’s death, she became Jacob’s second wife in 1814. On 8 September 1857, Rachel was among the 35 Teschner family members who arrived in America. She soon returned to Europe (late 1858) and was cared for, in her later years, by her sons, Isidor, Moses, and David. She died in Vag Besztercze on 16 March 1876. Her death record states that she was 80, but she was actually 78.

Her great-granddaughter, Rosebud (Teschner) Solis-Cohen, wrote the following about her: “Rachel was born in Vienna and lived as a child in the Judengasse section of Vienna. She was there when Napoleon bombarded the city and her stories about that experience were passed down to my family. Her family fled Vienna around that same time… Rachel came to America with her children in 1857, but was very much dissatisfied with life here. She was dictatorial and tried to manage the lives of her sons and daughters-in-law, making trouble between them. Within a year, she returned to Hungary, where she was supported by her sons who were still there. She died when she was nearly 80.”
