"(I) Jacob Vandergrift, a lineal descendant of the immigrant ancestor, came to Pittsburgh, with his wife, from the eastern part of Pennsylvania, prior to 1800. He was a boat builder and constructed the first steamboat to go down the Ohio river. He resided on the North Side, and continued actively as a boat builder until his death. He married, in Philadelphia, Mary Hart, a granddaughter of John Hart, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence."
