About Jacobus "James" Middaugh

Jacobus’ (Canadian records invariably refer to him as James) will was proven on 7/25/1839.

Some of the lineages of second and third generation descendants of the original UELs are questionable. This is one of those cases. It could be there were two James/Jacobus/Cobbus MIDDAGHs in the Niagara area of Canada. One referred to as "of Niagara" and the other as "of Stamford". In the provisioning lists of 1785, 1786, etc., a James MEDDAUGH is generally listed adjacent to or near the listing of Peter MEDDAUGH. In various "Loyalist Lists" there is a James MEDDAUGH single (i.e. without family) and 23 years of age. In some of these records he is listed as having served in the Butler's Rangers. While it is possible he is not the same James MEDDAUGH listed with Petrus/Peter, this complation assumes they are one and the same individual. The compiler has made this assumption even though some of the land grant petitions refer to both a James MEDDAUGH of Stamford and to a James MEDDAUGH of Niagara as the basis for being granted land. Since Stamford and Niagara are adjacent townships in the District of Niagara in Ontario, Canada it is entirely possible he moved from one township to the other during his lifetime. Jacobus' will names only a wife, Mary, two sons; John and Jesse (The compiler believes that Jesse is the “Joseph of Niagara” in Mr. Reid’s book.) and a grandson, James Brooks. William D. Reid on page 220 of his book "The Loyalists in Ontario" lists Ann, who married John BROOKS of Queenston; John of Niagara; Joseph of Niagara; Deborah, who married Richard CLEMENTS of Niagara; Benjamin of Niagara; Eliza and Frances (a daughter) as his children. Mr. Reid's claims are supported by applications for grants of land from the government. In separate OICs Benjamin, Deborah, Eliza and Hannah state they are children of James MEDDAUGH of Niagara. The compiler has not discovered an OIC application for Frances. While the children not mentioned in Jacobus" (James') will, could be children of some other James MEDDAUGH (there is no credible evidence that one existed), based on the evidence that does exist and the research conducted by Mr. Reid and the absence of any conflicting evidence this compltion assumes the children listed by Mr. Reid, plus Hannah, are the children of Jacobus and the grandchildren of Petrus.
