In the town of Żukowo, Kartuzy County, in Kashubia, the Norbertine nuns made and decorated women's bonnets called złotnica. The embroidery was made with silver or gold threads. The designs of the złotnica were based on the baroque style. The nuns taught noblemen's and rich Kashubian peasants' daughters how to make embroidery. One of their pupils was Marianna Okuniewska from Żukowo.
The nuns stopped making the złotnica some time after the first partition of Poland in 1772. The nunnery was closed in 1834.
Two of Marianna Okuniewska's granddaughters, Jadwiga Ptach and Zofia Ptach, were responsible for bringing back the lost art of Kashubian embroidery in Żukowo. The sisters founded the Żukowska School of Kashubian Embroidery.
Jadwiga has been praised for her artistic and authentic designs. Some of her work is exhibited in the Gdańsk-Olivia Museum.
During World War 2, Jadwiga was imprisoned in the Ravensbrück Concentration Camp.
Jadwiga died in 1968 and is buried in Żukowo.
A plaque in Gdynia is dedicated to her memory.
