About Jakob Prillevitz
Handwritten notes by Betty Collins from MOOC Archives, and family tree created by Peter David Ross (1953).
http://www.eggsa.org/newspapers/index.php/cape-times/1134-cape-time... Cape Times 1881 1 January - March Written by Clive Jones. Posted in Cape Times TUESDAY 08 FEBRUARY 1881 MARRIAGE PRILLEVITZ Mr. J (2nd son of Rev. GC PRILLEVITZ of Batenberg, Holland) to BALNE Alice Mary Ann (4th daughter of W BALNE) on 07 February 1881 at Cape Town
From Dorothy Langham's (daughter of Mary Prillevitz) Balne family "bible", relevant bits paraphrased below:
Jakob and his brother Johan(n) came from Holland. The Prillivitzes were a well-off educated family - had records back to 1600s. Jakob was employed by William Balne (f-in-law) - may have been a bit of a ne'er-do-well who lived off mother. ... They lived in Johannesburg, where Jakob was in the government administration during the Boer War, when he went back to The Hague. Alice took her 6(?) children (when Marie was 4), just abandoned her house and everything in it, and because she was British, got passage on a British troop train and returned to her parents in Cape Town. Moved to Sea Point later as Rondebosch was "too dull".' (See slightly different version of this story on Alice's profile!)
Jacob worked for William Balne at some stage.
