By Lancaster (Mass.), Henry Stedman Nourse James Atherton came here from Dorchester with wife Hannah. He is thought to have been a brother of Major General Humphrey Atherton. In Lancaster children were born to him as follows: James, 1654; Joshua, 1656; Hannah, 1657; Mary, 1660; Elizabeth, 1666; Deborah, 1669; Joseph, 1672. In 1697, being then of Milton, he conveyed his land in Lancaster to his eldest son James, Jr. In 1703 the eastern part of the home lot is found in possession of Joseph Wheelock, he having purchased it from Isaac Temple of Marlborough. The western portion had been bought by William Divoll. James and James, Jr., were then resident near Bare Hill, and Joshua near Still River in Harvard. James, the father, died at Sherborn in 1707, aged 84 years. The highway from the brick store east to the neck road probably lies on the south side of the Atherton lot.

Description: James Atherton, Genealogical Column

Date: January 10 1938

Newspaper published in: Boston

Source: California State Library, Sutro

Note 2983. Part 1. A few days ago an inquiry was made through these columns concerning James Atherton of Lancaster and in time past many other inquiries have been made about this family. Inasmuch as no genealogy of this family has been published, the following notes may be of use and interest to a large number of descendants. 1. James (1) Atherton, who probably came from Wigan, Lancashire, England, was born in 1626 and died at Sherborn, Mass., Aug. 6, 1710, aged eighty-four years. His widow Hannah died at Sherborn, Dec. 29, 1713. By trade he was a tanner. On March 15, 1643, he signed the church covenant at Lancaster and owned lands in the center of the town. After the massacre at Lancaster, Feb. 10, 1675-6, he returned to Dorchester, removing thence to Milton in 1678. Their last remove was to Sherborn where they died. In 1679, being then of Milton, he con- veyed his lands in Lancaster to his eldest son, James. His will was dated at Sherborn, Jan. 3, 1707-8, and proved Sept. 19, 1710, in which he named his widow, Hannah, administrator, sons James and Joshua, daughters Hannah, Elizabeth and Deborah; son-in-law Samuel Bullard, overseer. (Middlesex Probate, 19:37.) Children, all born in Lancaster: 2. James, born May 13, 1654. 3. Joshua, born May 13, 1656. 4. Hannah, born Feb 10, 1657-8. 5. Mary, born Feb. 17, 1660-1; died Lancaster, Nov. 4, 1670. 6. Elizabeth, died Lancaster Aug. 10, 1665. 7. Elizabeth, born Oct. 6, 1666; married Milton, Aug. 28, 1691, Isaac Grosse. 8. Deborah, born Jun 1, 1669. 9. Joseph, born April 28, 1672; soldier in the reduction of Canada, 1690, in the company of Captain John Withington of Dorchester. Of the 75 soldiers of this company who set out only 46 returned; doubtless Joseph Atherton was one of those killed, for his nephew, James Atherton, Jr., of Harvard, was assigned his township rights in Ashburnham, which were due him as a veteran of this campaign."
