James Bourland was born about 1723 (guess).
He marred Sarah Dean and had the following known children:
- Rebecca Bourland, married Samuel McClung
- Andrew Bourland
- John Bourland, married Elizabeth Crawford
- William Bourland, married Mary Dean
During the Revolutionary War, John, Andrew and William Bourland served in Capt. Vance's Company in 1779 in Augusta.[1]
James was killed by Thomas Murray on 3 December 1761.[2] As listed in the Chalkley's reference, on 12 December 1761, Thomas Murray was charged with the "felonious killing of James Boreland".[3]

The children of James and Sarah (Dean) Bourland, all born on the Jackson River (except Rebecca), in the Warm Springs area of Augusta County, Virginia were: Rebecca Bourland married Samuel McClung; Andrew Bourland married Elizabeth (NFD), William Bourland married first cousin Mary Dean; John Bourland married Elizabeth Crawford.
Excerpt from Annals of Bath County, Virginia:
"James Bourland came from Pennsylvania in 1752, and was murdered nine years later. One Thomas Murray was committed for the crime. Archibald seems to be a brother. His wife was Jean Jackson. James left a son named Andrew, and there were probably other sons."[5]
