James Brewster, Vicar at Sutton-cum-Lound

Children of William Brewster and Prudence Unknown:

1. James Brewster died in 1613. He matriculated at Cambridge in 1582 and succeeded his uncle Henry as vicar at Sutton on Lound.

"By the 1590s, William Brewster's brother, James, was a rather rebellious Anglican priest, vicar of the parish of Sutton cum Lound, in Nottinghamshire. From 1594, it fell to James to appoint curates to Scrooby church so that Brewster, James and leading members of the Scrooby congregation were brought before the ecclesiastical court for their dissent. They were set on a path of separation from the Anglican Church. From about 1602, Scrooby Manor, Brewster's home, became a meeting place for the dissenting Puritans. In 1606, they formed the Separatist Church of Scrooby."

James Brewster succeeded Henry Brewster as Vicar of Sutton, and held the living till his death in January, 1613-4. He was buried at Sutton on the 14th of that month. 

His wife's name was Mary, and she is doubtless the "Mrs. Mary Brewster, widow," who was buried at Sutton, on April 7th, 1637. 

Their children, as they are to be collected from the Register of Sutton, were, 

• Grace, baptized in 1600; 
• Elizabeth, 1603; 
• Susanna, 1606; 
• Judith, 1609. 

Grace married William Glaive on October 22d, 1620; Judith, Edward Oldfield on November 5th, 1633. Susanna appears to have died unmarried in December, 1637. 

As a Mr. Welbeck is said to be father-in-law to James Brewster in Slack's account of the proceedings respecting the Hospital of St. Mary Magdalene at Bawtry, it may be presumed that this Mary was originally Mary Welbeck. The Welbecks came from Suffolk, and were principal people in the parish of Sutton. The heiress married Cordel Savile, a member of the great Yorkshire family of that name.

The Cambridge alumni database seems uncertain whether James Brewster was William Brewster's brother or Henry Brewster the vicar's son

To prove the relationship is more than the use of the name is the same, additional research must be done to document that the William, who consented to the church document mentioned in the article was one and the same as William Brewster of the Mayflower."

James Brewster born say 1568 probably in Scrooby died 14 Jan 1613 in Sutton, Nottinghamshire, England. He married Mary Welbeck who died 7 Apr 1637 in Sutton, Nottinghamshire, England and they had four daughters Grace who married William Glaive, Elizabeth, Susanna and Judith who married Edward Oldfied.[1] He is proposed to be the James Brewster who was vicar of Sutton cum Laude. He matriculated at St John's College at Cambridge in 1582, succeeded Henry Brewster (his uncle) as vicar at Sutton on Lound in 1594. His brother William Brewster testified on his behalf.[2][3][2] Although it has not been decisively proven that this son James is identical to the man of the same name who was vicar.[4] However, the evidence is fairly strong that he was. [5]
