They came from England and settled in Burlington County, NJ Married to Mary Jones the daughter of Joseph Jones and Elizabeth Hart. Elizabeth was the daughter of Major Ralph Hart of Hopewell. James Burroughs was a Rev War Patriot as a Fifer and served with the New Jersey 3rd Regiment at Valley Forge with his son John Burroughs.

James was the son of John Burroughs and his wife, whose name was either Elizabeth or Mary. He probably grew up in Trenton (now Ewing) Twp., Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co., New Jersey.

He married Mary Jones about 1752. They had ten children: John about 1753, Joseph in 1756, Elizabeth in 1758, Sarah in 1760, Philip in 1762, Mary in 1765, Hulda in 1767, Jeremiah about 1769, Mercy in 1772 and Jemima in 1775.

James was a musician in the 3rd Regiment for New Jersey during the American Revolution.

It is assumed, but not confirmed, that he was buried at the First Presbyterian Church of Ewing; however, his name does not appear in transcripts of that cemetery.
