James served as private in Lieut. Zebulon Lyon's Company under Capt. Benjamin Waite of the Vermont Rangers. He enlised August 7, 1776. All five of his sons also served in the war. He was son of Samuel Call and Abigail Sprague and husband of Hannah Masters. His grave is lost.
