Believe was living with son Arnold in 1830 in Jackson Twp., Susquehanna, Pennsylvania as census shows a male (James) and female (Chloe) in the age columns that would be their ages. James Cargill III was b. 22 Apr 1762 in Cumberland RI and removed to Richmond (Cheshire) New Hampshire after the birth of his first child. He is listed in 1790 Richmond, Cheshire, New Hampshire Census, page 2, column 4. The remainder of his eleven children were born there. In the spring of 1814 he gathered his worldly possessions together and placing them, with his family, except for Nancy (m. Calvin Stone of Connecticut and Vermont) and James IV (went back to RI and came to Jackson twp. in 1816 by foot), his eldest dau. and second son, in an ox-cart drawn by two yoke of oxen, he left New Hampshire and made the long journey to the wilds of Susquehanna County in northeastern Pennsylvania, settling in West Jackson - then part of Harmony township, on the road that leads from Lakeview to Burrows Hollow. Only four or five families were in that section when he came and joined the other New Englanders in what was known as the "Vermont Settlement."
He was a private in the Revolutionary War enlisting at the age of 16 years. His father, James II, was also in the same unit at the age of 49 years.served short enlistments in the militia in Capt. Enoch Weatherhead's company, Col. John Mathewson's regiment of Rhode Island troops.
