Christening: 11 Feb 1626 Barnstable, Devon, England No burial location has been found or been cited for James Jr. There is an extended Bio of his father James on his memorial in Find A Grave #34205577 The following was copied from his father's bio. In 1670 the operation of the tavern succeeded to James, Jr., who was not charged the excise tax that year because he was beginning a new business. The operation of the tavern went smoothly after James, Jr. took it over, and there were no more fines for license and liquor violations, although one of the patrons was charged with "drinking, gameing and uncivil revelling" in 1671 when he brought a mare into Cole's parlor. Although James, Jr. was not held responsible he was cautioned to "keep good order in his house . . . " with "no revelling there."
In 1668 he sold to his son James the land down to and including the lot upon which stands the Baptist Church. In 1689 his son James sold it to William Shurtliffe
James Tibbes is the son of James Sr. and Mary Tibbes Cole; he was christened at Barnstable, England on February 11, 1626/7.[1][2] James Sr. brought the family to New England in 1633, when James Jr. would have been approximately six years old.[2] James Jr. and Mary Tilson were married at Plymouth in the Plymouth Colony on December 23, 1642.[3] They had seven known children:[4]
James Jr. followed in his father's footsteps to operate an ordinary. In March of 1670 the Court allowed him to keep an ordinary at Plymouth and he was cautioned to "keep good order in his house that there be noe revelling there."[5] In June of 1670 the Plymouth Colony Court exempted him from paying the annual excise tax "in regard that hee is a new beginner in keeping the ordinary att Plymouth."[6]
James' wife Mary died sometime before September of 1698 when he married Esther (surname unknown.) She acknowledged a land deed to his son Ephraim on November 22, 1699.[7]
James married a third time, in 1700 or later, Abigail (surname unknown.) Some publications identify her as Abigail Davenport, but no supporting sources have been found.[7]
On January 28, 1702/3, James Cole deeded his estate to heirs Ephraim, Hannah/Elisha Bradford, Martha/Nathaniel Howland, and Joanna/Thomas Howland in equal shares. The heirs agreed to provide for James and his wife Abigail for the rest of their lives.[8]
