JAMES COLEMAN b. ca. 1740 Caroline Co. VA m. 19 Dec 1764 Anna Cocke, daughter of John Cocke of Cumberland Co. VA (Sur: Daniel Coleman Jr.; Teste: James Cocke and Stephen Cocke)

James performed patriotic service in the American Revolution. He inherited 100 acres of his father's home place in Cumberland Co. (the part of Goochland that became Cumberland in 1749). His brother Joseph inherited the remaining 300 acres after the death of their mother. On 5 Oct 1777, James and Joseph conveyed 102 acres of land to Massa Womack (DB 5, pg. 512, Cumberland Co. Records). This tract included the 100 acres owned by James, and 2 acres of the land inherited by Joseph.

Mention of James was found in The Colemans, Fitzpatricks & Their Kin, by Reba Fitzpatrick Lea, p. 360: "There also appears in 1782 (Buckingham Co. ) a James Coleman who later has land on the Appomattox River. He has a son called James Coleman Jr. who in turn has a son named Joel Watkins Coleman. Family members say James left Virginia and went to Mississippi for a few years, then to New Orleans before returning to VA". No death date or will has been found for James or Anna.
