Biographical Summary by Wikipedia
Sir James Dalrymple - was born May 1619 and died 25th November 1695. He was buried on 12th December 1695 at St. Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh. He became an legal advocate in 1648. In 1657, he was appointed to Scotland's law commission by Oliver Cromwell but being an ardent royalist refused to take his orders from him. In gratitude for his loyalty to the Crown, James was knighted by King Charles II in 1664. During the reign of James II he went into exile in Holland and later returned with William of Orange in 1689 as part of the Glorious Revolution. In 1690, William of Orange - now King William III made James Dalrymple 1st Viscount Stair. To this day there is still an Earl Stair. Wikipedia
