About James Dicks, Snr. SV/PROG-1

The birth date of James b. 1782 and Jane Croft do not seam to be right. If they were married in 1796 that makes James 14 years old, surely 14 is rather young for a boy to marry. Jane is said to be born in 1776 which makes her 20, surely she would not have married a 14 year old? According to the two death notice the person who might be a son did not know how old James was. The one record says some where between 40 and 50 years. the other about 60. Nor did the person know were he was born or who his parents were. Ephraim Dicks brother of James is said to be born 1782, does this make them Twins?

Statement for Joseph DICKS of Rietfontein in ward of Kraai River and
district of Aliwal North. (filed with Death Notice of James DICKS - signature actually thought to be Jonah DICKS) "I am the son of James and wife who died in England. Came out in Weymouth in Ford's party. My father had remarried, but my stepmother died on the ship in Table Bay and was buried in Cape Town. She left a child which was afterwards given to a farmer called SCHEEPERS to bring up. I believe the child died. I think a boy...."

Sue MacKay - at http://www.1820settlers.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Genealogy&f...

10 April 2008: Yesterday I had to give a talk to the Trowbridge Branch of Wiltshire FHS and managed to spend a short time at the new Wiltshire and Swindon Archives in Chippenham beforehand. The following might be of interest to Dicks researchers.

William Dicks, eldest son of James Dicks and Jane Croft, was buried in Longbridge Deverill on 14 June 1798, so he only lived a week or so.

Elizabeth Dicks was buried in Longbridge Deverill on 13 March 1805 aged 34. If this was Elizabeth Croome, first wife of Ephraim Dicks, then she was quite a bit older than he was. She probably died of complications following the birth of Ephraim Junior.

Mary Dex [sic] was buried in Longbridge Deverill on 29 January 1816 aged 31. This is almost certainly Ephraim Dicks' second wife, Mary Whatley, and ties in with a baptism in Longbridge of a Mary Whatley on 26 December 1785, daughter of Silas and Phoebe Whatley.

I was also able to have a VERY quick glance at Longbridge marriages and the following may help to pinpoint the relationships between the various members of Ford's Party. Witnesses are in brackets.

  • John FORD m Martha DICKS 15 Nov 1786 (Joseph DICKS; John CURTIS)
  • Richard RALPHS of Westbury m Mary CROOM 4 Oct 1787 (John CURTIS; Jeremiah PAYNE)
  • Joseph DICKS m Elizabeth ADLAM 23 Mar 1789 (John FORD; Edward FRY)
  • Benjamin DICKS m Hannah PAIN 9 Aug 1790 (James PAIN; John CURTIS)
  • Edward FORD m Ann PAIN 10 Feb 1792 (John CURTIS; Jeremiah PAYNE)
  • James PAYNE m Hannah DICKS 10 Nov 1795 (John CURTIS; John FORD)
  • Ephraim DICKS m Elizabeth CROOME 18 July 1796 (Richard RALPHS, Samuel GULLIFER)
  • James DICKS m Jane CROFT 16 Oct 1796 (John ADAMS; Samuel GULLIFER)
  • William WHATLEY m Mary CROFTS 7 Dec 1796 (Samuel Gullifer; James DIX)
  • Edward Lumbert FORD m Mary CROOME 18 Dec 1796 (Richard RALPHS; Samuel GULLIFER)
  • William FORD m Anne CROOME 25 Dec 1799 (Joseph ?? [can't read my own notes but looks like PERRY!!]; Samuel Gullifer)
  • John FORD m Elizabeth PAYNE 14 Sep 1802 (same witnesses as above)
  • Ephraim DICKS m Mary WHATLEY 16 Feb 1806 (Wm. PAYNE; Samuel GULLIFER)
  • Benjamin DICKS m Elizabeth PAYNE 17 Feb 1806 (john KINGMAN; Samuel GULLIFER)

So, looks like FORD's Party were all cousins about twenty times over! Bit like trying to work out 1820 settler relationships! Hope this hasn't confused you all even more!
