Civil War Veteran. James Ellis Donohue son of Hiram Donohue and his first wife, Mary Cecy Jaco. Hiram had 5 children by his first wife, Sarah, Wm. M. Calvin Waldo, James Ellis and Salathiel Donohue, Salathiel died during the Civil war and is buried at Andersonville Prison in GA. James Ellis Donohue Married Sarah Ann Byrnes, d/o Matilda Shields and step daughter OF Washington Pierce and Martin D. McCarty. James and Sarah had 9 children, all sons except for a adopted daughter Mary Baker who they raised from a few days old. their sons were, John William, Sylvester, Martin D, Salathiel "Saith", Hiram P, Peter A, Charles, AND Ellis Eliza Donohue. His father Hiram married 2nd Lydia Smith, and they had 11 chldren, Lydia Smith raised James from the age of abt 7 yrs old

James Ellis Donohue (1832-1896), 75th Regiment West Virginia Infantry. He had two fingers shot off in an accident and was discharged from service.

James Ellis Donohew, a son of Hiram and Mary Cecy (Jaco) Donohew, was born in December 1832 in Lewis County, VA and died in Jackson County WV July 10, 1896. His name is spelled Donohew, Donahue and Donohue in various records. His descendants use the spelling Donohue. James married Sarah Ann Byrnes February 12, 1852 in Jackson County VA.  Sarah, a daughter of Matilda Shields and a granddaughter of Peter Shields of Braxton County VA (WV), was born out of wedlock in Jackson County VA (WV) April 1, 1835, and died there March 9, 1932. She went by the surnames Byrnes, Shields and Pierce at various times in her life.     James served the Union in the Civil War in Co I, 75th Ohio Volunteer Infantry from December 9, 1861 until his discharge at Baltimore, MD August 9, 1862. He was diabled by losing two right fingers from an accident.     James sent the following letter to Ann while he was on the March in October 1862.  

Oct the 18)62 Monterey (probably Virginia) Dear wife 1 take my pen in hand to let you know that my health is well. hoping you and the children may enjoy the Same blessing. I have to inform you again that we left huttonsville on the Six of this month and marched on the distance of fifty miles we Stoped (sic) Six miles from this town to rest day or so and we received word that the Sesesh was coming in to this town and we got orders to march on the double quick time. so we got in here 8 miles in 1 hour and forty minutes when we here the Sesesh attacted us and we gave them hail Columbia. our loss is 3 wounded one of whom the leg was cut off above the nee (sic). so the rebels is gone from here and I suppose the(y) make stand at Stanton. we have six thousand men here in this valley - the 123 va, the 25 ohio, 32 ohio, and the 75 ohio. the(y) are all in good health and anntious (anxious) for to fight. So I think the war will Soon be at an end and I hope we will get home before long. I will Send little Silvestor five cents of the Sesesh money in this letter so the friends can see the scrip the(y) use in this Country. I would Send you five Dollars in this letter if [ thought it would go home Safe but you will let me know in your next letter if you needed it and I will send it to you. you will let me know all particulars about home. [will close this time and conclude in Sending you and the children my best respect.
