About James Dorsey Booth

James Dorsey Booth son of James Walker Booth and Rosa Belle Dorsey. Dorsey was born Dec. 28, 1908 in Horry Co. He was a graduate of the College of Charleston, worked at the Univ.of Nebraska, and returned to Charleston as head of MUSC’s pharmacy department. On Sept. 11, 1931 Dorsey married Annie Mae Howell, daughter of Talmage Howell and Vera Galloway. Annie Mae was born Feb. 21, 1913 on the family farm - about 2 ½ miles from Lamar, near Darlington. Her family ran Cox Dry Cleaning in Charleston and Annie Mae worked there. Dorsey worked part –time at Cox’s when he was a student and that’s how they met. Annie Mae was a secretary for J. C. Long and later for Mayor Gaillard. A neighbor loaned money so that the couple could build a house on Queen Street. Annie Mae ran a kindergarten in her home and directed children’s plays at the Dock Street Theater. Later the family moved to Atlanta where Dorsey was a pharmacy representative for Schering. The next move was to Florida where Dorsey was a pharmacist and chemist. (On one occasion the family filled capsules by hand for a big order that could not be filled otherwise.). During the 1950s the Booths lived in Palm Springs (CA), and Saluda, NC. Before moving to Miami Dorsey was head of the pharmacy at Talyor Memorial in Tallahassee. A hard - working, family oriented, wonderful father, he loved baseball and fox-hunting. Dorsey died Jan. 13, 1993 and Annie Mae died Jan. 14, 1989. They are buried in Bonita Springs, Fl. Children: Hazel Jean James Dorsey, Jr. b. & d. Jan. 10, 1946 in Miami Sherry Ann
