He was a miner in Coxhoe, Durham, England in 1861. (on census record) His daughter Alice's marriage record says he was a coal miner. He was a Mariner in 1851. (on census record) He first went to sea as a boy in 1841. He would have been about 16 years old. Four years later, he was charged with desertion, but the charge was cancelled.
The 1861 census shows him living in Coxhoe, Durham, England. There was another James Eastwood living in Durham who was born in 1816, whose mother's name was also Ann.
James' wife, Elizabeth, appears on the 1871 census as a widow.
