1742-1745 Essex County, Virginia Deed Book 23; [Antient Press]; Page 269-272 THIS INDENTURE made the Seventeen day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty five Between JAMES GATEWOOD of the Parish of SOUTHFARNHAM in the County of Essex, Merchant, and PENELOPE his Wife of the one part and JOHN CHAMBERLAIN of the Parish and County aforesaid, Planter, of the other part; Witnesseth that the said JAMES GATEWOOD and PENELOPE his Wife for the sum of One hundred and twenty five pounds current money of Virginia to them in hand paid have sold unto the said JOHN CHAMBERLAIN and his heirs a certain Neck Seat or Tract of Land scituate in the Parish and County aforesaid and containing One hundred and seventy five acres, being part of a Tract of Six hundred acres granted by Patent dated the 22d. of October 1663 unto JOHN GREGORY of the Parish and County aforesaid. deced., the said one hundred and seventy five acres being all the Land which by the Last Will and Testament of JOSEPH BAKER deceased was given and bequeathed unto the said JAMES GATEWOOD as by the said Last Will and Testament recorded among the Records of the aforesaid County of Essex on the Nineteenth day of November one thousand seven hundred and Twenty will more fully appear; the said Land beginning at a small marked Hickory standing by HOSKINS CREEK on a small point thence runing South and by West along an ancient line of marked trees that formerly divided this Land and the Land of WILLIAM STONE to a Stump of Hicory standing in the line of JOHN GATEWOOD deced., and thence runing South and by West along the ancient line of the said GATEWOOD till it meets with the Swamp (formerly called GRIGORYS SWAMP) and so down the said Swamp till it meets with a small Creek the same being a Branch of HOS-KINS CREEK. and so runing down the several courses of the said Little Creek till it meets with the Main Creek and so runing up the several courses of HORSKINS CREEK to the begining, all which several courses containing as aforesaid One hundred and seventy five acres be the same more or less, Together with all houses meadows woods and appurtenances; To have and to hold unto the said JOHN CHAMBERLAIN his heirs and assigns and the said JAMES GATEWOOD for himself his heirs doth grant that he and his heirs the hereby bargained premisses unto the said JOHN CHAMBERLAIN his heirs against all manner of persons will warrant and forever defend by these presents; And that the said demised premisses and the appourtenances now are unto the said JOHN CHAMBERLAIN against all manner of persons & upon receipt and at the charges of the said JAMES GATEWOOD & PENELOPE his Wife their heirs executed all such furhter acts for better conveying of the premisses unto the said JOHN CHAMBERLAIN so as such further assureance contain no other Warranty than against the person making the same and so as the person making the same be not compelled to travel further than to the Court of the County where the said Land shall lye or to the place where the General Court shall be then held; In Witness whereof the above named JAMES GATEWOOD and PENELOPE his Wife have to this Indenture sett their hands and seals

1745-1749 Essex County, Virginia Deed Book 24, Part 1; [Antient Press]; Page 264-268 THIS INDENTURE made the fourteenth day of Novemr, in year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Forty seven Between RICHARD GATEWOOD and FRANKEY his Wife of County of Essex and Parish of Southfarnham. of one part and JAMES GATEWOOD of same County and Parish of other part; Witnesseth that RICHARD GATEWOOD and FRANKEY his Wife in consideration of the sum of Twenty five pounds current money of Virga: to them in hand paid by JAMES GATEWOOD, by these presents doth bargain sell and confirm unto JAMES GATEWOOD his heirs one tract of land containing Ninty one acres more or less lying in County and Parish aforesaid Ninety acres whereof lying on North of the Branches of a small Creek runing into HOSKINS CREEK (one acre thereof lying on South side of said Branches and laid of for the use of a MILL and bounded by a new made corner Maple standing in the Branch, thence up said Branch sixteen poles to a corner Poplar, thence by the side of a small Branch ten poles to a new made Corner Dogwood and Gum, thence across a peice of Old Field sixteen poles to a corner white Oak standing in a Vally, thence ten poles to the beginning the other Ninty acres lying between the Land of JOHN CHAMBERLAIN and the land that was bequeathed by the Last Will and Testament of AMEY BAKER deceased to BENJAMIN GATEWOOD and by the said Branches, except and always excepted out of this present Indenture one acre of said Land for a BURYING PLACE at the usuall place of Burying; Together with all houses orchards profitts and appurtenances to the same belonging; To have and to hold the land and premises (except as before excepted) unto JAMES GATEWOOD his heirs free and clear from all In cumbrances whatsoever; And RICHARD GATEWOOD and FRANKEY his Wife and their heirs shall warrant and forever defend by these presents; In Witness whereof the parties to these presents have interchangeably set their hands and affixed their seals the day and year first above written
