GATEWOODS OF BRITISH WEST INDIES
AND VIRGINIA
By Richard S. Uhrbrock
Palo Alto, California

The history of John Gatewood of Virginia prior to 1663 is not known. On 13 Feb. 1663 he witnessed a deed
of gift made to Charles Goodrich of Rappahannock County by Thomas and Jane Button of Farnham Parish. He was present 4 Jan. 1664 when Jane Button relinquished dower rights to lands transferred by Mr. Thomas Button to Henry Corbyn. Members of the Corbyn family lived on St. Kitts and Antigua as early as 1650.

John Gatewood was one of ten persons named in a patent granted to Col. John Catlett when he was allotted
500 acres on the north side of Rappahannock River 2 June 1666.4 On 19 July 1666 he was listed as one of seventythree persons who arrived in Virginia under the sponsorship of Mr. Thomas Button who was granted 3650 acres on the south side of the Rappahannock. Before his death in 1706/7, although he acquired large land holdings, no reference is found to a land patent from the Regal Government or to a deed from Lord Fairfax prior to 1700 in the name of Gatewood or variations of that spelling.
As in many colonial families there is the tradition that three Gatewood brothers, John, Thomas and Richard,
came overseas during the late 1600s. Thomas is supposed to have disappeared from the record prior to 1700. John Gatewood of Virginia named two of his sons Thomas and Richard. However, no connection between Virginia Gatewoods and contemporaneous Gatewards in the British West Indies has been established.

From The Book "John & Amy Gatewood, and their decendants 1666-1986" written byCarol Gothberg, the following information is written on John. Where John Gatewood came from before appearing in Virginia, is not known. His name indicate she came from England, but records supporting this, cannot be found, as many records have been destroyed. The name John Gatewood first appears in Virginia records 1-13-1663 as a witness of a deed of gift made by Thomas & Jane Button of Farnham Parrish. The name John Gatewood does not appear again until 1676, when John received deed from John Grigory for 100 acres. After purchase of this land, is probably when John started his family, the first of the children probably being born before 1680. From 1663 to 1706, the name John Gatewood appears approximately in 30 instruments in the county where he lived. Either John was nearly 40 years when starting a family & lived another 30 years, or he was not21 years old when he witnessed the record in 1663. It is also possible that the John as witness in 1663, was the father of our John, who then starts appearing in the records 1676 & later on. John's will was dated November 14th, 1706, probated 1-10-1706/7 in Farnham Parish, Essex Co. p328 To eldest son John Gatewood, 100 acres I bought of Edwin Thacker. To eldest daughter Frances Shackelford: 1 shilling To son Richard Gatewood: the plantation I now live upon. To son Thomas Gatewood: 150 acres part of a parcell of land that I bought of Cpt. Richard Haile, now deceased, it being part of 5,000 acres belonging to Col. Thomas Goodrich, Mr. Henry Aubrey & Maj. George Morris, all deceased. To son Henry Gatewood: 75 acres, one 6 year old stear, 1 cow & calf To daughter Amie Burnett: 4000 pounds of sweet scented tobo, 1 bay mare with a blase in her face branded on the near buttock with this brand 3. To my beloved wife Amie, 3 youngest children, Sarah, William & James Gatewood: the remainder of worldly estate, equally divided.
