1750 Essex County, Virginia Will Book 8, Part 2; [Antient Press]; Page 400-402 In the name of God Amen I JOHN GATEWOOD of the parish of Southfarnham & County of Essex being in health & of sound & perfect sence & memory thanks be to Almighty God do make and ordain this my last Will & Testament in manner & forme following [that is to say] first and principally I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping through the merits death and passion of my Saviour Jesus Christ to have full and free pardon and forgiveness of all my sins & to inhearit everlasting life and my body I comit to the earth from whence it was taken to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named and as touching my Temporal Estate as it hath pleased Almighty God to bestow upon me I give and dispose thereof as followeth.
Item I give and bequeath unto my beloved son JOHN the plantation he now lives one and thirty fore acres out of the land I now live on adjoining & two hundred & fifty acres out of the land purchased of THEODRICK BLAND as it was laid of by Mr. RODGERS to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my beloved son WILLIAM the plantation he now lives on as its laid of & plantation at Tuckoe being part of the tract of land purchas'd of THEODRICK BLAND as it was laid of by Mr. RODGERS to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son ISAAC the plantation he now lives on & the land adjoining laid of by Mr. RODGERS being part of that tract purchased of THEODRICK BLAND to him & his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath unto my belov'd son RICHARD the plantation he now lives on being part of that tract purchased of THEODRICK BLAND and as it was laid of by Mr. RODGERS to him and his heirs lawfully begotten of his body and for want of such heirs to be equally devided amongst my other sons & there heirs forever also I give unto my son RICHARD the one half of the stock of cattle sheep & hoggs that is on his plantation
Item I give unto my belov'd son PHILIP my dwelling plantation with the appurtenances and all the land thereunto belonging & all the land that I have not give a way already to him and his heirs lawfully begotten of his body and for want of such heirs to my other sons equally to be devided amongst them & their heirs forever.
Item unto my belov'd Daughter AMEY one young Negro above the age of seven years & one good feather bed & furniture two cows & calves three ewes & lambs three dishes & half dozen plates, to her and her heirs forever carry'd over.
Item I give unto my belov'd Daughter WNEFRET one young Negro above the age of seven years Sr one good feather bed & feather bed & furniture two cows & calfs three ewes and lambs three dishes & half dozen plaites to her and her heirs forever but increase either of my Daughters AMEY or WINNEFRET die without heir then her or their part be equally devided amongst my other daughters to them and their heirs forever.
Item I lend my belov'd wife all the rest of my Estate both real & personal during her natural life & after her decease to be equally devided amongst all my children & their heirs forever & further my desire is that my belov'd wife shall have my plantation to work her hands during her life but in case my son PHILLIP & she disagree that PHILLOP to have call'd his during her life and after her death my plantation to be his and further my desire is that my two daughter AMEY & WINNEFRET have full power to reep their Negro's & work them on my plantation during their living single and after my wife death if my son PHILOP & my Daughters disagree then my Daughter or Daughters have chose of any room on the plantation to her or their selfs.

A Codacill Further it is my desire that after my wife death my Estate be lotted by some Gent and each to take the part allotted them but if any one be disturbed or refuse to take the part allotted them then that part or there part be devided amongst the rest of my children & their heirs & no part of my Estate to be sold but each to keep what is lotted them in Testimony I have hereunto further set my hand and fixt my seal this 26 day of Octor. 1750. This last Will and Testament of JOHN GATEWOOD deced. was this day exhibited in Court by the Executrs. therein named who made oath thereto and the same being fully proved by the oaths of all the Witnesses thereto and thereupon admitted to record and is truly recorded. Know all men by these presents that we CATHA. GATEWOOD, WM. GATEWOOD, JOSEPH BURNETT & ISAAC GATEWOOD are held and firmly bound unto THOS. WARING, FRAS. SMITH, JOHN CLEMENTS & JAMES JONES Gent. Justices of Essex County in the sum of two thousand pounds to be paid to the said Justices & their Successors. To the which payment well and truly to be made done bind ourselves and every of us our and every of our heirs, Executors and Administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals dated this 19th day of February 1750.

Unto my daughter Anne Burnett 4000 pounds of tobacco and one bay mare with a blase in her face branded on the near buttock with this brand 3.
All the rest of my worldly estate, to be equally divided between my three younger children and thy beloved wife Anne Gatewood, namely between my beloved wife and Sarah Gatewood and William Gatewood and Francis Gatewood.

Item I give & bequeath to my loving Sister CATHREN GATEWOOD my Neger Sue to her & her hares for ever and my horse Coffe.
Item I give & bequeath to my loving Brother JOHN GATEWOOD one hhds of Tobacco and fore dear skins & my gunn to him and his hares.

Item my desire is that the first child that my negro Sue brings that my Sister MARY GATEWOOD shall have it, the second to my Sister ANNEY GATEWOOD, the third to my Sister WINIFRED GATEWOOD to them & their heirs forever.
Item my desire is that my two Sisters Mary Gatewood & Anney Gatewood have & each of them a Ring when this you see remember me Joseph Gatewood,
Item I give & bequeath to my Father JOHN GATEWOOD my negro James and all the rest of my Estate.

Unto and for the only use of the upper Church of Southfarnham Parish one silver salver of five pounds sterling price to be purchased and delivered within two years after my decease.
Unto George Treble all the tobacco he oweth unto me.
Unto Thomas Boarn one half of the tobacco he now stands justly indebted unto me.
Unto Thoms Dix, the widow Olive and the widow Aires half the sums of tobacco that each standeth justly indebted to me.
Unto Peter Godfrey for his cares. and trouble of me all the medicines I have now sent for to England and my best saddle and bridle.
Unto John the son of Peter and Elizabeth Godfrey the sum of ten pounds sterling within twelve months, after the decease of my beloved wife Amy.

Unto my Godson Joseph Gatewood my Negro man called,Tom. to be delivered unto his guardian or trustees until he comes of age. Also my Negro girl Sue after my wife's decease.
Unto Wm. Gatewood two cows and calves; my intent and meaning is Wm the son of John Gatewood deceased..
Unto John Ferguson one gold ring of the value-and coat of twenty shillings.
Unto Henry Gatewood one new suit of drugt cloaths.
Unto James Gatewood my son in law, all the land and plantation I bought of Thomas Wheeler, yet so as he shall not debarr his mother from useing any part of the said land during her natural life.
Unto all the rest of my wife's children not before mentioned, to each a gold ring of the value and cost of twenty shillings.
Unto Thomas Bell one half of the tobacco. he now justly standeth indebted unto me.
Unto Anthony North my best suit of wareing apparel'.
Unto my beloved wife all the rest of my estate. -
William Allen receive and mark all the tobacco shipt home for the use of my sisters.

Planter, of the other part, Witnesseth that the said THEODORICK BLAND and FRANCES his Wife for One hundred and Ninety pounds currant money of Virginia to them in hand paid hath granted unto the said JOHN GATEWOOD (in his actual possession now being by virtue of a bargain and sale to him thereof made for one whole year and by force of the Statute for transferring uses into possession) one certain tract of Land containing Nine hundred eighty nine acres being in Countyes of Essex and KING and QUEEN, the said Land being part of a Patent granted to FRANCIS MERIWETHER the twentieth day of October one thousand seven hundred and four for Two thousand Two hundred acres; To have and to hold the said tract of Land and all other the premisses hereby granted unto the said GATEWOOD his heirs and assigns forever, And the said THEODORICK BLAND and FRANCES his Wife for themselves their heirs promise the sd. premisses are forever hereafter clear from all former acts (the Quitrents hereafter to grow due and payable to our Sovereign Lord the King his heirs and Successors for and in respect of the premisses only excepted) and the said THEODORICK BLAND and FRANCES his Wife all the premisses will warrant and defend by these presents; In Witness whereof the said THEODORICK BLAND and FRANCES his Wife hath hereunto set their hands and seals

Planter. have given unto the said ISAAC GATEWOOD his heirs and assigns all my Tract of Land containing Four hundred and thirty three acres lying in the County abovesaid on the Branches of HORSKINS RUN thence North East to a small Gum on the North side of the said Run at the mouth of a Branch, thence North to a little Hickory at the head of a Valley, thence North East to a red Oake corner of COLEMANs thence North EAst to a white Oake and Hickory by a Valley, thence South West to two corner red Oakes, thence North West to a corner red Oake of COLEMANs, HOWELs line, thence South East to a corner white Oak of HOWELs, thence South West to a Stake between a white and red Oake a corner of RICHARD GATEWOODs Land, thence South East. to a Spanish and white oake, thence East to a red Oake saplin on the East side of a Branch, thence South West to a small white Oake on the East side of a Branch, thence South East to a small red Oake saplin in JOHN GATEWOOD JUNIORs line, thence North Fast to a white Oake corner to JOHN GATEWOOD JUNIORs a little distance from the old line, thence South East to a Pine and black Oak saplin in JNO. GATEWOOD JUNRs. line, thence North East to a Spanish and red Oake, thence South East to a Poplar near a Slash, thence along the Slash to HORSK INS RUN and along the said Run to the place it. first began; To have and to hold the said parcel of Land and premisses to him the said ISAAC GATEWOOD his heirs and assigns from henceforth as his and their own proper Estate absolutely without any manner of Condition; In Witness whereof I have hereunto set. my hand and seal this nineteenth day of June in the Seventeenth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the second King of Great Britain &c., and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and forty four
