About Capt. James Felix Gatliff
1754 1763
However, James is found, as Gatlive, in a listing for September 1758 of the Colonial Militia for Augusta Co., Va., R975.5 V817c, v. 2, p. 65. Whether that is a contemporaneous listing of Militiamen, or just a subsequent compilation, is a question, because he may have been killed by Indians near Roanoke; according to Draper's The Preston Register, a James Gatlire (sic) was killed by Indians in the Indian Wars on 20 March 1758, in Augusta County, somewhere on the Roanoke River. Crozier's Virginia Military Records, R975.5 V817m, p. 35. I have no doubt that this is our ancestor. Recall that the European handwriting even today makes a lower case "r" that looks like a lower case "v", and it is readily apparent that Gatlive could be read as Gatlire. The Faulkner letter definitely claims him, giving the same information. According to a secondary source, he may have been buried on his farm near Roanoke. He may have served in the Virginia Militia at Braddock's Defeat.
