At the age of 14 James Henry was sent out by his step-father, William Smith, to earn a living. He was taken into employment by William Wright, who later became his father in law. He was actively involved in mercantile pursuits in Cradock and Aliwal North. He was a member of the Legislative Council in 1858. He had 12 children, 2 of whom died in infancy. . from Hilary Groves Gedcom file : James Henry (son of 1820 Settler) Greathead. Born 12 DEC 1819 Dudley. Died 8 MAR 1864 Sunstroke. This young man rode alone from Bathurst to Grahamstown when he was only 14, in the midst of murdering bouts by blacks, in 1834.
