James Hamilton of Shawfield is the son of Gavin Hamilton of Orbiston. Narional Records of Scotland, Erskine writs, Renfrewshire, reference GD1/129/3/1 James Hamilton of Shawfield is not mentioned in John Anderson's account of the family. Neither is he mentioned in in the charter of 1468 by which his father conveyed Orbiston (aka Osberstoun) to his eldest son Robert Hamilton, Chancellor of the Cathedral Church of Glasgow.
