The Reverend Mr. James Hamilton here treated is not the same person as Reverend Mr. James Hamilton, vicar of Carmunock although the two have been confused by the Fasti of the Church of Scotland. Fasti of the Church of Scotland, Volume III. Synod of Glasgow and Ayr, p.258

The Reverend Mr. James Hamilton here treated is the son of Robert Hamilton of Dalserf. On 26 October 1617 he was appointed tutor to his nephews William and Robert Hamilton, Hamilton Memoirs, p. 268 sons of his brother, the late William Hamilton of Dalserf. Inquisitionum II

Marriage

The Reverend Mr. James Hamilton married Katherine Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton of Torrance and his wife Katherine Hamilton. He died on 28 October 1648. 24 November 1613: Feu Charter granted by John [Spottiswood] archbishop of Glasgow, with consent of the dean and chapter of his metropolitan kirk, narrating that the 20 merk lands of Bischopforrest in the parish of Kirkpatrik Irngray and stewartry of Kirkcudbricht belonged to himself and his predecessors, archbishops foresaid, as part of the patrimony of their archbishoprick, and that John lord Heryis sometime heritable proprietor thereof resigned the same with the privilege of regality into the hands of the archbishop as superior 'ad remanentiam'; and disponing in favour of William Moring, portioner of Barboy, his heirs and assignees whomsoever, the half of the merk land of old extent of Barboy, with the houses, biggings, yards, tofts, crofts, outsets etc thereof, lying in Bischopforest within the parish of Kirkpatrik Ingray [Irongray] and stewartry of Kirkcudbricht. To be holden 'de nobis' in feu farm: Rendering therefor yearly the sum of 17s Scots as the former duty and 4d in augmentation thereof, the service of one shearer in autumn and the use of a horse for half a day 'ad glebas', - giving suit and presence when required at the courts of the regality held yearly within the bounds thereof, the archbishop and his successors being bound on their part to hold the said courts by sufficient bailies of their own household, and failing that to appoint one or more of the fittest of their feuars of Bischopforrest. The charter contains a precept of sasine directed blank. At Edinburgh. 2 June 1632: CHARTER de me by Thomas Wilsoune [Wilson], son and apparent heir of deceased Thomas Wilsoun, writer, burgess of Hammiltoun [Hamilton], to Robert Robertoun [Roberton] of Burnbank, his brother in law, (leviro) and Margaret Wilsoun, wife of the said Robert, sister of the granter, of a tenement of houses, with yards and a barn, and one acre of land from the end of the said said yard, with a stable and portion of waste ground on the east and west sides thereof, in the burgh of Hammiltoun, on the north side of the cemetery or "Kirk Yaird" thereof, which pertained to the said deceased Thomas Wilsoun and Christina Rae, his wife, mother of the granter hereof, in liferent, and to deceased John Wilsoune, their son, brother of the said granter, in fee, and now pertaining to the said granter, as heir to his said brother, and possessed by the said Christina Rae, as liferenter, reserving liferent of the said subjects to the said Christina Rae, and, after her decease, to the granter; containing precept of sasine addressed to James Hammiltoun [Hamilton], lawful son of Mr. James Hammiltoun, dean of Glasgow, as bailie.
