" James was the youngest of William and Ann Harkness.At age 16he joined the Continental Army on July 1, 1775 after the battle of Bunker Hill, served seven enlistments during the Revolutionary War and was drafted once, fighting in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, often saw General Washington, and was in the army at the evacuation of Fort Ticonderoga, New York, and the surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga, being mustered out as a sergeant in 1779 at Belchertown, Mass." The following is from Find A Grave" was a "Minute Man," marching on the first alarm from Pelham, Massachusetts, in Capt.Candless'company,Col. Benjamin Woodbridge's regiment, serving eleven days;he re-enlisted for eight months;and again in June, 1778, serving as corporal and sergeant in Capt. Joesph Perkins'company,Col.Nathaniel Wade's regiment." James was later involved in Shay's Rebellion. This is the main reason he went to Illinois. His DAR# A050646. Find A Grave # 18962480.
James Harkness - was a "Minute Man," marching on the first alarm from Pelham, Massachusetts, in Capt. Candless' company, Col. Benjamin Woodbridge's regiment, serving eleven days; he re-enlisted for eight months; and again in June, 1778, serving as corporal and sergeant in Capt. Joseph Perkins' company, Col. Nathaniel Wade's regiment. He was born June 21, 1756, and died at Harkness Grove August 18, 1836, and is buried in the Harkness cemetery, near Trivoli, Peoria county.
