About James Jacob Hastie
On the 22nd day of March 2005 at 1300 hours Jim's ashes were consigned to the sea off the coast of Hawaii from the USS Port Royal. Excerpt from letter the family received: "The burial at sea ceremony took place on our ship's deck. Conforming to naval tradition, our colors were lowered to half-mast. The sea was moderate, a few clouds wandered alone across the sky. The sun shined brightly and reflected off the surface of the water. Under these conditions the religious and military ceremony was conducted with great dignity. Our ship's Chaplain read the committal along with selected passages of Scripture. He then offered the benediction. A seven-person rifle detail fired a twenty-one-gun salute and the haunting strain of Taps was played."
