James Lawson Hathaway's childhood home was in then Harrison County, Virginia, which later became part of Barbour County. The 1750 Census has him, his wife and children in Randolph County, Virginia, parts of which were also folded into Barbour County. In the Civil War era, Barbour County was included in the new State of West Virginia. James also lived in Van Buren County, Iowa, and Scotland County, Missouri.

James Lawson Hathaway was a direct descendant of Francis Hattaway/Hathaway (b. Seventeenth Century) of Lancaster County Virginia. See "William Hathaway of Virginia - The True Story," at www.enonhall.com (an analysis deferred to by the Hathaway Family Association of America). James' ancestral line from the Lancaster County, Virginia, Hathaways follows:

(1) Francis Hattaway/Hathaway (16xx - 1719) of Lancaster County, Virginia.

(2) William Hathaway (1706 – 1771) of Enon Hall, Lancaster County, Virginia; m. Sarah Lawson.

(3) Captain John Hathaway (1733 – 1786), a Revolutionary War veteran of Fauquier County, Virginia; m. Sarah L. Timberlake (1739 - 1809).

(4) Francis Timberlake Hathaway (1779 – 1856) of Fauquier County, Virginia, and of Harrison County and Barbour County Virginia (now WV); m. Sarah Bourn.

(5) James Lawson Hathaway (1809 – 1880+) of Virginia (now WV), Iowa, and Missouri; m. Mary Weaver (1813 - 1873).
