James Hayward 39, Labourer, together with his wife Tabitha Pristow 37, and 6 children, were members of James Party of 60 Settlers on the Weymouth.

Party originated from Wiltshire.

Departed London, 7 January 1820. Arrived Table Bay, Cape Town on 16 April 1820. Final Port - Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth 15 May 1820.

Area Allocated to the Party : Bethany on the Lynedoch River - the location being known early as Bethany.

[Party: James; Occupation: Labourer].

[Although James and Tabitha were on the same ship as the other Hayward brothers (ie. James, William and George), he was not directly related to these brothers as he came from a different region in England. The parish of Westbury paid James the sum of £22:10:0 towards the costs of travelling to the Cape. References refer to him as 'James the elder', clearly to distinguish him from the other James settler (a1) who was some thirteen years younger]."

The original duties of the 'hayward' seems to have been to protect the fences round the Lammas lands when enclosed for hay i.e. 'guardian of the fence or hedge' and to prevent cattle from breaking through into the enclosed fields and growing crops, i.e. 'enclosure-protector'.

HAYWARD, HEYWARD

Godric Heiuuard, Brihtmer Haiuuard c1095 Bury (Sf); Richard Haiward 1166 P (Nf); William le Heiward c1179 Bart (Lo). The original duties of the hayward seem to have been to protect the fences round the Lamms lands when enclosed for hay (Coulton), hence his name, OE Heze-weard 'guardian of the fence or hedge'. This heze was a dead hedge easily erected and removed, forming an enclosure (OE (ge) h'ae'g) from which, to judge from the early and regular variation between heiward and haiward, and from his more general duties of preventing cattle from breaking through into the enclosed fields and growing crops, the hayward seems also to have been called (ge)h'ae'gweard 'enclosure-protector'. cf. also (from Piers Plowman): 'Canstow... haue an horne and be haywarde, and liggen oute a nyghtes, And kepe my corn in my croft fro pykers and 'p'eeues?'. In the Parish register of Horringer (Suffolk) c1670-80 Hayward is regularly written Howard, and in the Walthemstow Toni courtrolls from 1678 to 1882 the marshbaley is often called the hayward or howard, so that some of our Howards were probably Haywards. viz.
